The advantages with OEM ballasts: Fast (3-4 second) warm up time to full operating intensity, and a long life span.
The disadvantages with OEM ballasts: They're originally designed to be mounted partially or completely inside a sealed headlight, so they're more likely to fail if exposed to water.
Note: The following fitment lists are not exhaustive but just for reference, and there may be more applications. Please double check your OEM ballast to make sure it is the same, some vehicles have 2-3 different ballasts for the same model year...
