EUK-134 is a highly purified molecule and a multi-functional, super antioxidant and powerful free radical scavenger with self-regenerating property. It is a synthetic mimetic of two natural skin enzymes: catalase and superoxide dismutase.

It protects against free radicals, DNA damages and reduces erythema and redness.

It helps prevent premature aging and scavenges superoxide free radicals, eliminates hydrogene peroxide (H2O2) and transforms reactive oxygen species(ROS) into water and oxygen which are beneficial for the skin.

It protects skin tissue against toxic compounds, protects skin against UV-induced DNA damage leading to limit premature photo-aging.

It inhibits MMP-2, thus preserving a good ECM network.

It reduces damages caused by UV and skin free radical activity.

It is used in prevention of DNA damage, repair DNA, brighten skin tone, anti-irritant, anti-stress, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and sun care products.

It is complementary to SPF ingredient.

 

EUK-134 has dual antioxidant function i.e. superoxide dismutase and catalase mimetic activities.Its therapeutic use and studies conducted are based on its property to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced cellular injury in the body. It is a  low-molecular-weight synthetic complex that has better potency, stability, and bioavailability than endogenous antioxidant enzymes.

EUK-134 can act as a scavenger for oxidative species such as hydrogen peroxide, peroxynitrite and superoxide. This compound is a salen-manganese complex that has been modified to increase its catalase activity while retaining SOD activity.

 

EUK-134 has the unique and amazing capacity of regenerating itself during its free radical scavenging action. Thereby, EUK-134, represents a complete nature mimetic antioxidant system that can be used as an active cosmetic ingredient to limit premature aging, reduce photo-aging, protect the skin and its DNA from sun damage and decrease redness.

 

MECHANISM OF ACTION

People consume food and water every day, transport them to various body tissues through the digestive system and circulatory system, and are metabolized in cells to release energy. During the entire metabolism process, a large number of reactive oxygen species (ROS) will be produced, including: O2-, H2O2 and HO2-, -OH, etc. These ROS can damage the normal cells of the human body, leading to cell apoptosis and even necrosis.

The two important antioxidant components in the human body are: superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). These two components work closely together to convert the ROS  produced in the metabolic process into water and oxygen to maintain the body’s normal metabolism.

Due to the high molecular weight of SOD, it is difficult to penetrate the stratum corneum. In addition, even if SOD enters the skin in a small amount through pores and sweat glands, it is easily hydrolyzed by protein and has poor stability and fast metabolism in the human body. These characteristics of SOD prevent its application in cosmetics. Therefore, EUK-134 was developed to replace the application of SOD and CAT in the cosmetics field.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF EUK-134

Many inflammatory and non-inflammatory diseases, UV rays, pollutants, smoke, and radiation exposure can cause oxidative damage to the skin.

The synthetic SOD/ CAT mimetic EUK-134 might be able to compensate for seasonal deficiencies in antioxidant defense capacity at the skin surface, protecting the skin against oxidative damage.

EUK-134 is now commercially available as an antioxidant for the protection of dry or irritated skin. It must not be used immediately with strong acids such as suspensions of ascorbic acid. Strong acids will completely destroy EUK-134 which is based on manganese.

NOTE: Please avoid EUK-134 if you have known hypersensitivity to manganese. Always do a patch test on the upper forearm with the product to test for possible allergic reaction.
