Chemical composition:
1.The main chemical components of Roman chamomile oils are a-pinene, camphene,
b-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, 1,8-cineole, y-terpinene, caryophyllene, and propyl angelate
and butyl angelate.
2.The main constituents of German chamomile oil are chamazulene, a-bisabolol,
bisabolol oxide A,bisabolol oxide B and bisabolone oxide A.
History:
Derived from the Greek word meaning 'ground apple' and the Latin word 'nobilis', referring to a
noble flower, it certainly is a plant of many uses. To the Egyptians it was a herb dedicated to the
sun to cure fevers and to the moon for its cooling ability.

Chamomile is a small perennial herb.There are two types of chamomile flowers called as Roman
Chamomile and German Chamomile. German Chamomile has small daisy like white flowers,
feathery leaves,hairless branching stem and grows upto 60cm high.Roman Chamomile grows for
cultivated in Hungary, Egypt, Eastern Europe and France, while Roman chamomile is cultivated
in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Morocco and France.
Oil properties:
The Roman chamomile essential oil has a sweet, apple like fragrance and is very light clear
blue in color with a watery viscosity,while the German chamomile oil has a sweet,straw
like fragrance,is dark blue in color and its viscosity is medium.Both chamomile oils are extracted
from the flowers by steam distillation, with the Roman chamomile yielding about 1.7 % from
fresh flowers and German chamomile yielding about 0.2 - 0.4 %.
Function:

Usage:
1. In vaporiser or burner 5-7 drops (0.3ml) with water.
2. For bath, steam bath and compress use 5-7 drops (0.3ml) - For bath use in a capful of
bubble bath to aid dispersion.
3. As a massage oil - add 0.5ml or 10 drops to 15-25 ml of vegetable carrier oil.
Cautions: Non-toxic and non-irritant. It should be avoided during pregnancy.
